Services — three bench entries

Three services. Each with a written ledger entry.

From a straightforward battery change to a multi-week conservation project, each service is documented from intake to handover.

Methodology

How each service is conducted

Every service at Balanceworks begins the same way: a written intake entry. The case reference, movement condition, and the service selected are recorded before the watch moves to the bench. This entry is the working document — it travels with the watch and becomes the basis for the handover summary.

The bench approach varies by service type. Battery changes follow a defined sequence that includes movement health observations alongside the replacement itself. Pocket watch services involve full disassembly, multi-stage cleaning, and regulated reassembly. Conservation work begins with an assessment, not with work — the customer receives a recommendation before any decision is made.

All three services share the same quality controls: components are cleaned before reassembly, timing is measured at regulation, and the completed ledger entry is provided at collection.

Shared quality steps

  • Written intake entry at counter
  • Movement examined before work begins
  • Ultrasonic cleaning (applicable services)
  • Timing measurement at regulation
  • Completed ledger entry at handover

Battery Change with Movement Health Check

A walk-in service that replaces the battery and performs a brief health check on the movement at the same time — coil resistance, gasket condition, and dial-side cleanliness. The customer receives a ledger entry recording the original battery, the replacement, and a short note on movement condition.

This service is appropriate for quartz watches that are running slow, stopping unexpectedly, or have not had a battery change in two or more years. The movement check at the same appointment means condition observations are captured before the next service interval.

What is included

  • Battery replacement with matching specification
  • Coil resistance measurement
  • Crown gasket visual inspection
  • Dial-side cleanliness note
  • Ledger entry provided at collection

Process

  1. 1Walk-in intake: case and movement recorded in ledger
  2. 2Battery removed, coil resistance measured and noted
  3. 3Gasket and dial-side inspected
  4. 4New battery fitted, crown sealed, movement run confirmed
  5. 5Ledger entry completed — condition note written

Service for Hand-Wind Pocket Watches

A complete bench service for hand-wind pocket watches, with careful attention to the larger components — mainspring, balance staff, and click work. Includes disassembly, ultrasonic cleaning, lubrication on the appropriate jewels and friction points, replacement of common wear items, and final regulation.

Customers receive a long-form ledger entry describing the calibre, the work carried out, and the timing rate at the end. This entry is the permanent service record for the watch.

What is included

  • Full movement disassembly
  • Multi-stage ultrasonic cleaning of all components
  • Mainspring assessment and replacement if indicated
  • Lubrication at all jewels and friction points
  • Timing machine regulation
  • Long-form calibre report in ledger at handover

Process

  1. 1Intake: calibre identified, condition recorded, turnaround estimated
  2. 2Disassembly: each component catalogued before cleaning
  3. 3Ultrasonic cleaning: multi-stage cycle for all movement parts
  4. 4Reassembly: fresh lubrication, wear items replaced as required
  5. 5Regulation: rate measured on timing machine
  6. 6Handover: long-form ledger entry with calibre notes and timing result

Conservation service for heirloom watches

Conservation Service for Heirloom Watches

A conservation-minded service for watches that have entered the family through inheritance. Begins with a written ledger entry at intake — case, dial, hands, movement — with photographs of each. The customer then receives a recommendation: full service, partial work, or stabilisation only.

Whichever path is chosen, original components are kept and labelled, and any decisions that affect originality are taken with the customer. The watch's history is treated as part of its value.

What is included

  • Photographic intake record (case, dial, hands, movement)
  • Written condition assessment with service recommendation
  • Customer consultation before any originality decisions
  • Replaced components labelled and returned to owner
  • Full service or stabilisation as agreed with customer
  • Completed conservation ledger entry at handover

Process

  1. 1Intake: photographic record and written condition notes completed
  2. 2Assessment: written recommendation — full service, partial, or stabilisation
  3. 3Customer consultation: recommendation reviewed and path agreed
  4. 4Bench work: agreed scope only, with components kept throughout
  5. 5Handover: conservation ledger entry, photographs, and labelled parts

Standards

Technical protocols across all services

Client data privacy

Contact information collected at intake is used only for communication about the specific job. It is not shared or used for other purposes.

Lubricants specification

Watch-grade lubricants are used at the correct viscosity for each friction point. The workshop does not substitute with general machine oils.

Ledger permanence

Service records are maintained in a permanent workshop ledger. Customers may request their previous service entries at any time.

Qualified bench work

All movement work is performed by the certified lead watchmaker. Secondary staff handle intake, documentation, and cleaning operations only.
