Brought in my grandfather's pocket watch — a Swiss piece from the 1940s that had not run in about fifteen years. The intake took a while because they wrote everything down properly, but I walked away with a proper entry in their ledger describing the state of the movement. Turnaround was about three weeks as estimated. The watch now runs within eight seconds a day and I have the timing result in writing.

Straightforward battery change on a Japanese quartz watch. The workshop noted a small crack in the crown gasket that I would not have spotted — they called to ask whether I wanted it replaced before closing the case. Small thing, but it is the sort of observation that would otherwise only come up at the next service years later. Four stars because the walk-in queue that morning was longer than I expected.

The conservation service is what set them apart for me. My mother's watch had sentimental value more than monetary value, and I was worried about a standard workshop just servicing it without considering what was original. Balanceworks photographed everything at intake and gave me a written recommendation — I could read through it and decide which path to take. Nothing was done without my say. The original crown, which had some wear, was returned in a small envelope.

I have taken three watches to Balanceworks over the past two years. Each time the ledger entry is ready at handover and each time the timing result is in there. It is a small thing but it is also the kind of thing that makes me feel the work was actually done rather than just charged for. The pocket watch service took slightly longer than estimated — they called ahead to explain why, which I appreciated.

Brought in a pocket watch that had been sitting in a drawer for a long time. Movement was running but losing time noticeably. Service took about three and a half weeks. The long-form report they provide at handover was more detailed than I expected — it listed the components examined, the lubricant points, and the timing result across three positions. Practical information, not just a receipt.

I come here for battery changes because of the movement health check. Two years ago they flagged a coil resistance reading that was at the lower end of normal — put a note in the ledger. This year when I came in, they could compare. The reading had dropped further, which they said pointed to early circuit degradation. Helpful to have the historical record. Battery change and movement check both completed in the same visit.

Case notes

Selected service records

Case ref: BW-2025-0342 Conservation — RM 4,500

Challenge

A 1920s Swiss pocket watch, inherited from a grandfather and not serviced in over two decades. The owner was concerned that a standard service might alter the original finish or remove patina that had built up on the dial over a century of use.

Solution

Photographic intake record completed covering the case, dial, movement, and hands. Written recommendation delivered to the owner: full movement service with stabilisation of dial patina only — no restoration work on the surface. Owner confirmed the path. Original mainspring returned in labelled envelope at collection.

Outcome

Movement regulated to +12 seconds per day across three positions. Dial patina undisturbed. Original mainspring retained. Service completed in 28 days. Long-form conservation ledger entry provided at handover.

"I can read the ledger entry and understand exactly what was done. That was what I needed."

Case ref: BW-2026-0071 Pocket Watch — RM 2,150

Challenge

A mid-century hand-wind pocket watch running more than three minutes fast per day. The owner had inherited the watch and used it regularly but had not had it serviced since acquiring it.

Solution

Full bench service. Disassembly revealed a hairspring with minor distortion that was corrected during reassembly. Movement cleaned in multi-stage ultrasonic process. Lubricated at all jewels and friction points. Balance regulated over four-day observation period.

Outcome

Movement regulated to +6 seconds per day. Completed in 19 days. Long-form report provided at handover including calibre notes, work carried out, and timing results across six positions. Original balance staff retained.

"The timing result was in the paperwork. I did not expect that level of detail."

Case ref: BW-2026-0119 Battery & Check — RM 470

Challenge

A Japanese quartz watch stopping intermittently. The owner had already replaced the battery at a mall kiosk six months earlier and was uncertain whether the issue was battery-related or movement-related.

Solution

Battery replaced and coil resistance measured. Coil reading returned a value at the low end of normal — noted in the ledger entry with a recommendation to re-examine if the intermittent stopping recurred. Gasket condition checked at the same time and found to be adequate.

Outcome

Watch running continuously since service — now three months. The coil reading in the ledger gives the owner a baseline for comparison at the next battery change. Completed as a walk-in service same day.

"Having the coil reading written down means I have something to compare next time."
